It's pretty easy. Or you could use this to say something, I don't bite unless asked to.

Food and Comics and Comics and Food

brianwood:

You may not have spied this post from Ryan Kelly, but in it he mentions a web comic he is starting called Cocotte.  Which implies food.  And I know for a long time now Ryan’s wanted to do a culinary comic series.  Me too.  But I am not writing Cocotte.

I wish him luck and good fortune.  My own culinary series, called STARVE, is something of a casualty.  Created for Vertigo almost two years ago, it hit too many of the same notes as that Anthony Bourdain book they got going on, and so it was ultimately not approved.  Another publisher, an indie one, also passed for similar reasons.  I guess there is a real glut of food comics coming.  STARVE now sits in limbo.  It may, probably, be heavily modified to be about water scarcity and the politics of food and serve as a sequel to THE MASSIVE.  If THE MASSIVE is a success, that is.

I mourn STARVE.  It was awesome.  It was funny, and really OCD with detail of food prep.  I did a lot of research, like Northlanders-level research.  But that’s the way it goes sometimes and repurposing is all you can do.

Although these days I think about writing STARVE as it was intended, but as a tv pilot.  My agent thinks its an insane concept for a story, though.  Maybe she’s right.

Random end of the year thoughts.  Go read Ryan’s post, its full of info.

I want to see Starve in what ever way possible. A comic would be great as I can sort of already visualise how the panels would work with the food but a tv-show? Damn, I’d watch it. Lots of ideas that sounds insane has worked in tv.

It’s no surprise that I like Ryan’s art — some days I see far too much influence from him in my own things even — so I can’t wait for Cocotte.

I am offering a free download of the entire 132-page Public Domain 2 artbook.  It’s about 115 megs, nicely high res, and looks great imported onto my iphone and ipad.  It represents about a decade of sketches and random art.
If you like it, please pick up a copy of the signed and numbered ltd ed print book!  Khepri’s selling the remaining stock, both editions, and its the only place you can pick it up.  There will be no further editions of the book beyond this.  Also be sure to check out the mini-screenprints.
Enjoy!
Click to download (direct link to pdf, right-click to save)

When it comes to black and white art, Brian Wood (and the people he work with) tends to be miles ahead of most others. (Jim Rugg and Jock are the exceptions in that they’re at that level too — a Brian Wood/Jock comic would probably blow my mind!)
I often leaf through the first Public Domain about Channel Zero. A wonderful wonderful book.

I commissioned this from Ryan Kelly - the 12 Years of Megan McKeenan!

Gosh. Local, together with Dave McKean’s Cages, are the best comics I own copies of. I love the Invisibles, and some parts of Sandman are fantastic but no, those two I mention before are way ahead. Miles and accelerating.

Megan from Local.
Finished reading the last two issues of Demo today — they were… Excellent. I even cried a bit. At six issues, volume two might only be half as long as volume one, but man, what quality through and through. I loved every issue even if Drowned made me uneasy. Large masses of water does that no matter the form and media it’s presented in.
I do really really really hope there will be a third volume later. Brian Wood and Becky Cloonan are too good to be left alone. (But don’t stalk them! Or give them lots of crap! They need time to relax too.)

I couldn’t find any good images of Demo 2.03 on the internet beside the cover, but damn. Damn, damn, damn. Volume One Love Story is a fantastic issue. It’s almost to cute, but only almost because it’s never sickeningly sweet. I admit that the storytelling is one of those that feels custom-made just for me as the love story of Marlo is told through post-its. Post-its! Lots of them.

(Brian Wood and Becky Cloonan are amazing. I wish this run was more than six issues.)

Got the first two issues of Demo volume two today and oh, my, maker. Becky Cloonan’s art is even more beautiful than before. Which is insane, but that’s the way truth works at times.
I’d say that the first issue, The Waking Life of Angels, is Becky’s. The writing’s fine of course, as usual. It’s the art that makes me go gosh wow. Pangs though, issue two, is Brian’s. Seriously. The writing in that one is so fucking good it’d have your heath stop for a minute or two. Gut-wretching.

Quite Sketchy grouptumblr

I guess I have to take responsibility for what I write in this blog, hope I don't make myself look like an ass too often.
