The key is finding a knot that works with what you’re wearing, sort of like a tie. If you’ve got a suit and topcoat on, you probably don’t want to go with the loose loop.

I loose-loop tightly if it’s not that cold, but I normally slip. :D Sometimes a Bird’s Nest, but only with shawls.

Bird’s Nest all the way. It’s hard to wear a thick Forth Doctor-scarf in any other way without getting stuck in things.
