Rhett Miller — I Need To Know Where I Stand
The Old 97’s are better than the members solo carrers, but that is hardly a surprise. There is something when all those people work together that’s missing otherwise. Better is perhaps a bad choice of word to use. Because the things they do without the rest of the band are good. Damn good. It just lacks something I can’t describe. But occasionally it feels like they’re getting close to that magic on their own. This is, I think, one of those songs. Unless someone proves me wrong, I’ll assume that the backup band on this concists of at least some of the band members.
