Simen of dailymeh theorizes about being too aware of the self. This is really just a very small excerpt, you should read the whole thing. It is very fascinating, a bit depressing and — I think — he’s often too right about this.
Meta is a symptom of excessive reflection. Meta is sometimes fun, sometimes genuinely insightful, but mostly, it’s just a sign that you can’t enjoy a thing for what it is. No, you have to apply it to itself, twist it onto its own tail, so that you can follow it around itself like the path of a Möbius strip. You’re not getting anywhere, just endlessly looping, but you aren’t able to settle down and enjoy whereever you are, either. That’s not progress, and it’s not honest enjoyment of something either. I think I can say that, because I’m obsessed with meta myself.
